  • Good Investors Make Money. Great Investors Create Value. | Mihir Desai

People have a bad impression of finance, and that's mostly worrying because its often justified, says Harvard Business School professor Mihir Desai. The sector is in dire need of rehabilitation, and there are several ways it can be done. The first is to realize that turning money into more money is a shortsighted investment. To play the long game, the system needs to focus on and reward value creation, which drives innovation and the economy. The second is to demystify finance (which is what Desai's new book The Wisdom of Finance is all about). Desai explains that finance got into its current state because it's more complicated than it needs to be, which makes it harder to control, given the general lack of understanding among the public. To remedy that, Desai taps into the brain's own str...

[Recorded 1960] This humorous promotional film for the Remington Rand UNIVAC computer features J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly in leading roles. Produced in 1960, the film outlines the earlier history of computing leading to the development and application of the UNIVAC computer. J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, the major figures in the creation of the ENIAC computer, left the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Engineering at the end of WWII to found their own firm. They had hoped to be the first to exploit the new concept of the electronic stored program computer, but were hampered by a lack of funds and, to some extent, by the bureaucracy surrounding their only major customer, the Census Bureau. They sought other investors but never had enough to properly complete their ...

Having bought his first stock at 11 years of age and having $53,000 dollars to his name at 17, he sure knows a thing or two about this market. And even though he spent a lifetime developing his skills, he’s has shared some very straightforward advice about investing that anyone can take advantage of. Warren Buffett’s first rule is to simply think long term over short term. He might be going overboard with this concept and he is truly embracing it around his entire life. He still lives in the same house he bought in 1958 and is also working at the very same desk since 50 years back and doesn’t use a computer but traditional pen and paper. He’s been quoted saying he doesn’t throw anything away until he’s had it for at least 20-25 years. So thinking long term is natural for him and the ability to resist selling has proved to be very successful for him. So having that said the reason why he’s holding on to what he buys is because he does his homework and does so very well. He’s stated many times that he spends 80 % of his day reading and catching up with the latest news and what companies to invest in. He thinks about life and investing as learning as much as he can and reads between 600-1,000 pages every single day. However not many people have the time or money to read for 8 hours a day and invest a few billions in the biggest companies like Warren Buffet, and it’s not a strategy that anyone can apply and find success with. And I wanted to make a video explaining how absolutely anyone can invest and become rich without taking time to read and grasp what to invest in which is why I’m super excited to share this with you. So when reading the Berkshire Hathaway Annual report of 2013, one of the most interesting paragraphs I found was on page 20 where he gave a very simple and straightforward advice about investing. He says “My money is where my mouth is: What I advise here is essentially identical to certain instructions I’ve laid out in my will. So in his will he’s demanded that future of his family's money money should be invested such as this: Put 10% of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90% in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund.” And he finishes it off by stating “I believe the trust’s long-term results from this policy will be superior to those attained by most investors” I told you it was straight forward. Don’t try to outplay the market but instead play with it. No man or machine can predict the ups and downs of the market, well except for Warren Buffett, so it would be foolish to try to beat it when you can simply join it. The very same formula was also mentioned in Tony Robbins book money master the game and index funds really seems to be the future of investments because the market will always rise in long term, and that’s essentially what you invest in - the market. The S&P 500 contains all the 500 largest companies that trade on NYSE and Nasdaq. Instead of picking stocks individually, you can now own a piece of all of the biggest companies such as Apple, Microsoft and Google. And investing in an index fund is very secure since a single company might go bankrupt, however the market will not. And you don’t have to stick to only the U.S market but could invest in the european and asian markets that’s also doing very well and you can even invest in global index funds to own a part of the biggest companies in the world. And for the other 10 %, the short-term government bonds is a very low risk low cost alternative that is also offered by vanguard amongst others. Short-term bonds are very attractive to investors because of they’re very stable and consistently rising, however the return tends to be smaller. And I’ll finish it off through Warren Buffett’s words: “The goal of the non-professional should not be to pick winners but should rather be to own a cross-section of businesses that in aggregate are bound to do well.” Music: Life of Riley by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1400054 Artist: http://incompetech.com/

John Heins and Whitney Tilson, co-founders of the Value Investor Insight newsletter, have done a thorough job of explaining how to look for stocks that are trading at significant discounts to what they are worth — the concept known as the value style of investing.…the authors present a clear framework for ferreting out undervalued companies.” —The New York Times About the book: In The Art of Value Investing, John Heins and Whitney Tilson offer a comprehensive set of answers to the questions that everyone investing seriously in the stock market should have thought through clearly before committing his or her hard-earned capital to the endeavor. What market efficiencies will I try to exploit? What analytical edge can I hope to have? How specifically will I decide to buy or sell? For answers, they call on market-beating money managers – including such investing luminaries as Seth Klarman, David Einhorn, Bill Ackman, Howard Marks, Mason Hawkins and Julian Robertson – who have graced the pages over the past ten years of their highly regarded newsletter, Value Investor Insight. To illustrate one of the equity investor’s most important tasks – how to value a company – they will present a particularly relevant current case study … on Google. About the authors: John Heins is the co-founder and President of Value Investor Media, Inc. and Editor-in-Chief of Value Investor Insight and SuperInvestor Insight. Previously, he served as CEO of Bertelsmann AG’s U.S. magazine subsidiary, ran AOL’s Personal Finance business and was a reporter and staff writer for Forbes magazine. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and earned an M.B.A. from Stanford University. Whitney Tilson is the co-founder and Chairman of Value Investor Media, Inc. and founder of Kase Capital, which manages value-oriented private investment partnerships. Prior to launching his investment-management career in 1999, he co-founded with Harvard Business School Professor Michael Porter the Initiative for a Competitive inner City, was a consultant at The Boston Consulting Group and was a founding member of Teach for America. To remedy that, Desai taps into the brain's own strengths: humans process stories much better than they process logic, so narratives from history, literature and philosophy can be used to teach and demystify finance. As an example, the The Parable of the Talents from the Bible teaches value creation as well as a finance textbook can. The philosophy of Charles Sanders Peirce can teach risk management and insurance. Mel Brooks can teach fiduciary responsibility. Finance has become demonized, but it's not a system that we can live without. It's becoming more pressing than ever to make reforms that increase value in society, rather than wealth. Mihir Desai's most recent book is The Wisdom of Finance: Discovering Humanity in the World of Risk and Return. Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/mihir-desai-good-investors-make-money-great-investors-create-value Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: So I’ve been concerned because finance has become demonized in the last several years and decade or two. And in part it’s for good reason, which is the practice of finance in many ways is broken. We see a lot of activity that is value extracting as opposed to value creating, and that is really disturbing. And, you know, that’s not just the financial crisis, but we see it in various parts of finance: in asset management to some degree, in banking, and so it is really worrisome that A: people have such a terrible impression of finance, and B: that we sometimes live up to it. But the truth is that we can’t live without finance and we need to rehabilitate finance. And the reason we can’t is because it is so central to the modern economy. So I think even people who are really upset about finance have to acknowledge that it’s really central, and we have to make it better. It is the fundamental mechanism by which companies grow, we save, we allow ourselves to potentially borrow to go to college, we save for our retirement. And innovation in general has to be funded. So finance is really central. What we have to try to figure out is how and why it's become so extractive as opposed to creating value. How do you know whether you’re creating value, and what is the recipe for creating value? So that sounds very finance-y. In fact I use The Parable of the Talents, which is a very odd parable from the bible, a very harsh parable in the bible, which effectively captures the logic of value creation straight out of a finance textbook. By that I mean it tells the story of these three servants, two of whom actually use what they’re given well and one of whom buries his talents. People don’t often know that the word talent is actually historically money. It is now—the modern notion is what we now think of as an ability. But the neat thing about that story is it maps to the basic recipe for value creation and finance which is, just to be a little technical, you know, you beat your cost to capital. You surpass people’s expectations. You do it for a very long period of time and you continue to grow. So that’s how companies create value. That little recipe for value creation, I show is exactly what is in The Parable of the Talents. And, in fact, John Wesley Mitchell, who is the founder of Methodism, in his essay on The Parable of the Talents, basically says almost the exact recipe for value creation that kind of comes out of a textbook which is, you know, beat your cost to capital, which is a way of saying: give back more than you take as long as you can to as many people as you can, and so on and so forth. So it’s actually kind of neat in the sense that The Parable of the Talents, that recipe for value creation, actually maps to the recipe for a reasonably good life. So that’s one example, but there’s like the book is littered with kind of basically examples like that.

They sought other investors but never had enough to properly complete their projects. They eventually sold their business to Remington Rand (later Sperry Rand) who incorporated it as the UNIVAC division of the company. Eckert remained with UNIVAC all his life but Mauchly left after a few years to become a private consultant. Remington Rand's Univac Division produced some of the earliest commercially available machines ahead of more famous firms such as IBM. The large management structure of the company often frustrated their engineers, many of whom left to found other very influential computer firms (e.g. Control Data Corporation). This bureaucracy is thought by many (including their Vice President, J. Presper Eckert) to have eventually limited their ability to take advantage of rapidly changing technology and to lose the lead to other firms such as IBM. In 1955 the Sperry Corporation and Remington Rand merged forming Sperry Rand. Sperry Rand then eventually merged with Burroughs to from Unisys and is still in business.
